2003 Buick Rendezvous Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on 2003 Buick Rendezvous?
A: Start by looking at the level of fluid in the brake master cylinder reservoir before replacing the rear brake pads. Should the level go beyond the halfway point, top off the reservoir to reach that level. Make sure the vehicle is raised and properly supported, and then remove the tire and wheel. Put two wheel nuts on to secure the rotor, then clamp the brake caliper against the outboard Brake Pad with a c-clamp , making it tight until the piston is forced all the way in and the caliper will slide off. Fist remover the c-clamp and the upper caliper bolt, and then gently turn the brake caliper down so you can see the brake pads without removing it from the mounting bracket. Take out the brake pads from the caliper bracket and unscrew the retainer parts. Use a piece of wood or the old Brake Pad between the clamp and the caliper piston as a cushion, and will the c-clamp to drive the piston in fully. Look at the Brake Caliper Bolt boots and the Brake Caliper Piston boot for any cuts, tears, leaks, or poor condition, changing them out if they're bad, and also look at the caliper bolts for corrosion, replacing them if there is any. While fitting new brake pads, wipe the caliper boot surface with denatured alcohol, press the piston all the way in using a c-clamp and a block, and then place the two Brake Pad retainers on the caliper bracket, checking that the wear sensor is against the outer pad's leading edge. Put the brake pads (9 and 10) on top of the retainers and onto the bracket, pivot the caliper upwards so it sits on the pads, apply silicone grease to the bolt and boot, and install the upper caliper bolt, making sure it's tightened to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). Remove the nuts holding the rotor, fit the wheel, lower the car, and check that the master cylinder is filled the right amount. Make sure not to drive the vehicle until it has a firm Brake Pedal; continuously pump the Brake Pedal about ¾ of the way down until you get consistent pedal pressure, and then burnish both the pads and rotors.
