• Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2003 Cadillac Seville?

  A: The replacement of Crankshaft rear oil seals requires the removal of the Flywheel. Place the Crankshaft rear oil seal remover (J42841) onto the Crankshaft before screwing on the retaining bolts. By using a variable speed drill with a socket adapter you can drive eight one-inch self-drilling screws into the seal through the removal tool guide holes but you must reduce drill speed because the screws thread into the seal. Finally remove all retaining bolts from the j42841 and attach the center screw to pull the seal assembly off the Crankshaft. Install the new seal only after clearing the drain to stop leaks from occurring. Gather any debris in the Crankshaft rear oil seal drain by using a wire or unbound plastic tie-wrap. A small amount of gasket maker gm p/n 1052942 (Canadian P/N 10953466) should be applied to the crankcase split line while the cylinder block Crankshaft rear oil seal area must receive clean engine oil coating gm p/n 12345501 (Canadian P/N 992704). Usage of clean engine oil on the new Crankshaft rear oil seal should avoid damaging its green inner coating. Before installing the new seal apply clean engine oil to its outer rubber surface. Also wipe down the Flywheel flange with a lint-free cloth. First loosen the central bolt of Crankshaft rear oil seal installer (J44642) so that its center hub extends one-half inch beyond the outer plate. Then position the j42841 onto the Crankshaft while installing the j44642 at its rear position. Secure the installation of j44642 onto the Crankshaft flange by threading its mounting bolts then tightening them correctly. Tighten the center bolt of the Crankshaft rear oil seal installer (J44642) until it bottoms against the crankcase but loosen the bolt afterward to remove pressure. Unmount the three mounting bolts. Examine the j44642 depth around the entire seal face before re-doing the installation process if needed. Finally, reinstall the Flywheel.
