2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: The first step when changing Timing Chain and sprockets starts with engine front cover extraction. Begin by rotating the Crankshaft until its timing marks fall into correct position. The Timing Chain dampener should line up with the camshaft alignment pin against the Crankshaft sprocket . Start by removing the camshaft sprocket bolt before you take off the camshaft sprocket with Timing Chain and after that the Crankshaft sprocket. Work through this procedure by removing the Timing Chain dampener bolts first followed by complete removal of the dampener. The procedure requires elimination of camshaft thrust plate bolts along with the thrust plate itself. Check the Timing Chain's cleanliness before examining both timing gears. If you remove the camshaft thrust plate for installation you must install it when complete then torque the thrust plate bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Before installing the Crankshaft sprocket apply engine oil supplement gm p/n 1052367 (Canadian P/N 992869) or equivalent to its thrust surface. Install the Timing Chain dampener before tightening its bolts to 21 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Start by installing the Timing Chain onto the camshaft gear. Hold the camshaft sprocket as the chain hangs down and guide the chain onto the Crankshaft gear. Place the Crankshaft timing mark at the bottom timing mark of the Timing Chain dampener , match the aligning marks between the camshaft gear and center line of the locator hole and the top timing mark of the chain damper. Align the dowel through the camshaft to enter accurately into the sprocket dowel hole. Secure the camshaft sprocket to the camshaft by using the mounting bolt before torquing down the camshaft sprocket bolt to 140 nm (103 ft. Lbs.). Screw the engine front cover tightly into position after applying engine oil to both the Crankshaft and the camshaft sprocket.
