• Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?

  A: First disconnect the negative Battery Cable and drain the cooling system before engine front cover replacement. Start the replacement process by removing the coolant recovery reservoir along with the drive belt tensioner and engine oil before moving to the Oil Pan and crankshaft balancer and Power Steering Pump with attached lines until you can appropriately position the pump. Detach both the thermostat bypass pipe and radiator outlet hose from their positions on the engine front cover before removing the Water Pump. To remove the front cover and its gasket, first unscrew bolt 1, 2 and 3, followed by unfastening the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor wiring harness bracket bolt and the bracket itself. When replacing the engine front cover it becomes necessary to remove the drive belt shield bolt and shield, the Water Pump, and the 24x ckp sensor. When reinstalling the 24x ckp sensor and Water Pump first secure both components before installing the drive belt shield with a 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) torque setting. Use gm p/n 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent sealant to coat gasket edges before installing the engine front cover with its gasket. Secure the engine front cover bolts (1, 2, and 3) with small bolts tightened to 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs.) the large bolts (2, 3) must be tightened to 55 nm (41 ft. Lbs.) and the small bolts to 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs.). Install the ckp sensor wiring harness bracket while securing its bolt with 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs.) torque setting. Start by installing the radiator outlet hose and thermostat bypass pipe to the engine front cover. Then continue installation with the Power Steering Pump with lines, crankshaft balancer, oil pan, and drive belt tensioner. Install the coolant recovery reservoir before filling the crankcase with new engine oil and the cooling system while reattaching the negative Battery Cable and executing the ckp system variation learn procedure.
