2003 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2003 Chevrolet SSR?
A: Park/neutral position switch replacement should begin with a parking brake application while shifting into the neutral position. Start by jacking up the vehicle and unthreading the nut that holds the transmission control lever to the manual shaft before taking out the control lever completely. Begin by detaching the electrical connections from the switch and unscrew the transmission-mounted bolts to extract the park/neutral position switch from the manual shaft. Various burrs exist on the manual shaft's outer edge which can hinder switch removal. To resolve this file down these burrs carefully. Position both switch hubs flat with manual shaft flats then slide the switch onto the shaft until its mounting bracket reaches transmission mounting bosses. New switches come with built-in positive assurance brackets which eliminates the need for employing neutral position adjustment tools. Mount the transmission switch to the transmission with two bolts set to just fingertight while placing the j41364-a neutral position adjustment tool (J41364-A) onto the switch so its slots match the tool's tabs. Apply a torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) until the upper locator pin reaches the switch slot. Detach the j41364-a from the transmission together with any additional positive assurance bracket. First install the transmission control lever onto the manual shaft using the nut before tightening it to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Additionally, reconnect the electrical connectors to the switch. Finally, lower the vehicle and check the switch for proper operation, ensuring the engine starts only in the p (Park) or n (Neutral) positions; the switch requires replacement when it fails to function properly.
