2004 Chevrolet SSR Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2004 Chevrolet SSR?
A: A successful replacement of the park/neutral position switch starts by setting the parking brake and placing the transmission into the neutral position. Raising the vehicle first enables access to complete this operation by disassembling the transmission control lever to manual shaft attachment with one nut then fully extracting the lever. You must disconnect proprietary electrical connections from the switch and unscrew the park/neutral position switch's mounting bolts to the transmission before extracting the switch from the manual shaft. Use a file to shape the manual shaft's outer edge when the switch will not come off easily to eliminate burrs. Your installation process begins by placing the switch hub flats against manual shaft flats followed by sliding the switch onto the shaft unit its contact with transmission mounting bosses. New switches for installation already contain positive assurance brackets which eliminate the requirement for neutral position adjustment tools. The switch requires two bolts for attachment to the transmission while being tightened just by finger strength. Position the neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A) on the switch while ensuring both slots overlap the tool's tabs. Then rotate the tool until the upper locator pin lines up with the switch slot. The bolt torque should be set to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) after removing the tool. Positive assurance brackets should be removed if present. Reinstall the transmission control lever with its nut and secure it to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) of torque. Then reconnect the electrical connectors to the switch. Test the switch functionality by lowering the vehicle while ensuring it activates only when the transmission is set to p (Park) or n (Neutral) positions. The switch requires replacement if it fails to work properly.
