2003 GMC Envoy Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Valve Stem Oil Seal on 2003 GMC Envoy?
A: Start your Valve Stem Oil Seal work with valve stem seal remover and installer (J 38820), camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222), and valve spring compressor (J 44228). Begin the task by taking out the cam cover and spark plugs before you deal with exhaust and intake sprocket bolts. Put the Camshaft sprocket holding tool j44222 onto the Cylinder Head first before you adjust two horizontal bolts onto both Camshaft sprockets to stabilize the timing chain. Carefully pull Camshaft sprockets and their attached timing chains from their positions on the camshafts. Then uninstall Camshaft cap bolts and place caps in a designated rack for later use. Place the Camshaft caps and camshafts aside before using a preferred adapter to press air into the engine cylinder. Office (J 44228) tool to compress the valve. Then detach both valve keys and valve spring compressor (J 44228) from the Cylinder Head. Use the valve stem seal remover (J 38820) tool kit to safely take out the valve seals when you have removed both the valve and its retainer. First inspect and clean the Cylinder Head before adding engine oil to the valve stems for their installation. Smoothly apply valve seals with the valve stem seal tool (J 38820), then insert the valve spring and its holder. Put the spring compressor back on to pressurize the valve springs again. Place the valve keys afterward and disassemble the spring compressor tool (J 44228). Bleed air from cylinders to let the Camshaft buttons and edges absorb clean engine oil. Then replace camshafts on their original shafts. Attach the Camshaft caps back to their original journal openings and tighten each Camshaft bolt to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Place the Camshaft sprockets back on their proper positions before taking off the Camshaft sprocket holding tool j 44222. Set the intake Camshaft sprocket washer and bolt plus exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt in place then torque the intake Camshaft sprocket bolt first to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) and later to an additional 100° using the torque wrench (J 36660-A). Turn the exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) during the first step and then proceed with j 36660-a torque tool for an additional 135° turn during the final pass. Replace the spark plugs and install the Camshaft cover after completing this job.
