2004 Buick Park Avenue Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring in the Steering Wheel on 2004 Buick Park Avenue?
A: To replace the air bag clock spring, ensure to disable the sir system and follow essential precautions. Do away with the air bag clock spring and the Steering Wheel nut and take note of the alignment mark of the Steering Shaft and wheel. Remove the steering shroud, detach the Steering Wheel from the shaft, pull the tilt lever straight out if applicable, and remove the tilt lever assembly. Remove 2 torx(R) head screws from the lower shroud and subsequently remove the lower shroud. Then, if necessary, remove 2 torx(R) head screws from the upper shroud and remove the upper shroud next. Detach the wire harness straps from the steering column wire harness, then unplug the retaining ring and sir system coil from the Steering Shaft and dispose of it if replacing. For installation, the directions of the wheels should be straight ahead and the block tooth, as well as the centering mark, should be at the 12 o'clock position. If there is a need for centering, instructions should be followed from the notice of the coil assembly. The new sir system coil will already be pre-centered; however, make sure not to remove the centering tab until installation is complete. Coat the Steering Shaft assembly with grease onto the Steering Shaft assembly. Coat a turn signal cancel cam assembly and align the coil assembly with it on the horn tower. Then slide a new coil by sifting it across the Steering Shaft assembly. Tighten the retaining ring at the groove of the Steering Shaft assembly and take off the centering tab from the new sir coil. Mount the upper shroud and fasten it with 2 torx(R) head screws and tighten to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in) and then lower shroud and fasten it to 2 torx(R) head screws and prevent tightening up to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). For the automobiles that have a tilt column, then adjust and slide the tilt lever handle into the steering column until it locks. Pass the wiring through the Steering Wheel, line up the Steering Wheel with the mark on the Steering Shaft, and after sliding it on the shaft, tighten the nut to 41 n.m (30 lb ft). Lastly, install the air bag clock spring and turn on the sir system.
