2004 Buick Regal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What does the service of the engine control module (ECM) typically involve on 2004 Buick Regal?
A: Both pcm replacement and eeprom programming constitute the standard service operations for powertrain control modules. Verification of the correct pcm must happen before installation responsibilities begin. It is necessary to replace an unfit pcm with a new service pcm that needs programming since the new unit has no pre-installed programming software. Engine control system reports an unprogrammed eeprom condition as well as eeprom malfunction with code p0602. An electrostatic discharge (ESD) to sensitive components on the circuit board can be prevented by not interacting with either connector pins or soldered components. It is mandatory to cut off engine power at all times when working with pcm connectors and power source devices such as Battery Cable or pcm pigtail and pcm Fuse or jumper cables. The service starts with a battery negative cable disconnect followed by removal of the left front inner fender brace and then the air cleaner intake duct and finally the air cleaner housing cover screws to extract the housing cover from the system. The removal process starts by taking the pcm with wiring harness from the air cleaner housing but only after disconnecting the pcm electrical connectors. The pcm then requires its connectors disconnection and separation from the air cleaner housing. The first installation step involves mating the pcm connectors with each other while torquing them to 8 n.m (71 lb in) before you return the pcm together with wiring harness back into the air cleaner housing assembly . Use the screws to secure the air cleaner housing cover by torquing them to 4 n.m (35 lb in) while also attaching the air cleaner intake duct and the left front inner fender brace. Connect the negative Battery Cable as the last step. Engineers need to conduct programming of the fresh pcm.
