• Q: How to replace the front coolant reservoir on 2004 Cadillac XLR?

  A: Begin surge tank replacement by draining the cooling system and waiting for the engine to cool down since hot fluid and steam pose burn risks. Disengage the tension in surge tank outlet hose clamp with Hose Clamp Pliers (J 38185) to disconnect the surge tank outlet hose from its tank. The surge tank must be removed by first uncapping the upper stud and its matching upper nut followed by loosening the side nut and disconnecting the coolant level sensor electrical connector. Apply clean coolant lubrication to the surge tank's inside diameters when installing the surge tank into its position. Screw in the upper surge tank nut before tightening all nuts to 8 Nm (71inch lbs.), and replace the protective cap on the surge tank upper stud. First reconnect the electrical connector of the coolant level sensor then attach the surge tank outlet hose followed by tightening its clamp. To finish installation connect the surge tank inlet hose while tightening its clamp after which fill the cooling system.
