- Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on 2004 Cadillac XLR?A: To replace the lower intermediate Steering Shaft, first ensure that the wheels of the vehicle are straight ahead and the steering coil assembly have the Steering Column in lock to avoid damage to the sir. Lock the Steering Column by inserting a j 42640 Steering Column lock pin (J 42640) into the access hole. Then, take out the upper to lower intermediate shaft bolts, lower coupling shield, and lower coupling pinch bolt followed by extracting the lower coupling from the steering gear. Move the bottom intermediate shaft off the upper intermediate shaft and move it off the vehicle. For installation, slide lower intermediate shaft over the upper intermediate shaft and attach lower intermediate shaft coupler to the steering gear, adhering to fastener notice in service precautions. Mount the lower coupling pinch bolt into the lower coupling, and tighten to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs), then mount the lower to upper intermediate shafts retainer bolts, and tighten with 48 nm (35 ft lbs). Lastly, install the lower steering coupling shield and tighten the shield screw with 3,5 nm (31 inch lbs).
