How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on Cadillac XLR?

Before beginning intermediate Steering Shaft replacement start by aligning the wheels straight with Steering Column set in the lock position to protect the sir coil assembly. Slip in the Steering Column lock pin (J 42640) through the Steering Column access hole so the orientation stays correct. Begin shaft replacement by removing first the bolts connecting upper to lower intermediate shaft followed by the lower coupling shield and the lower coupling pinch bolt. To proceed with repair separate the lower coupling from the steering gear before sliding the lower intermediate shaft through the upper intermediate shaft and pulling the lower component out of the vehicle. Installation involves inserting the lower intermediate shaft onto the upper intermediate shaft and attaching the lower intermediate shaft coupler to the steering gear. Fasten the lower coupling pinch bolt to the lower coupling by applying 34 n.m (25 lb ft) torque before securing the lower to upper intermediate shaft retaining bolts at 48 n.m (35 lb ft). Tighten the lower steering coupling shield screw until it reaches 3.5 n.m (31 lb in).
