2004 Chevrolet Blazer Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the upper ball joint on a 4WD on 2004 Chevrolet Blazer?
A: Place four-point vehicle stands under the 4wd vehicle before lifting it to work on the upper Ball Joint. Lift the Torsion Bar and disconnect the wheel speed sensor wiring harness bracket and brake hose bracket from the upper Control Arm through their bolts. You need to remove the upper Ball Joint retaining nut and the cotter pin. Stand aside while a helper hits the Steering Knuckle next to the upper Ball Joint stud while you lift the upper Control Arm with a pry bar to loosen the joint. Place a block under the upper Control Arm to keep both pieces out of the path while you suspend the Steering Knuckle in place by hand. Use a 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) drill to make a 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) deep hole in the middle of each rivet area and then take out rivet heads with a 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) drill while you remove the rivets with a pin punch. Fasten the new upper Ball Joint by putting it on the upper Control Arm and tightening bolts and nuts to 23 nm (17 ft. Lbs.). Replace the upper joint by screwing it into the Steering Knuckle and tightening its retaining nut to 61 ft. Lbs. Make sure you align the joint for the cotter pin installation while avoiding more than a 1/6 turn. Place a new cotter pin through the upper Ball Joint stud before bending its ends against the attached nut. Fasten the wheel speed sensor wiring harness and brake hose brackets to their proper positions on the upper Control Arm by using a bolt and nut set correctly at 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). When the task is complete put on the tire and wheel. After that lower the vehicle and align the front wheels.
