2004 Chevrolet Impala Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2004 Chevrolet Impala?
A: To change the Timing Chain and sprockets, first open the engine front cover. Match timing marks of the sprockets as close as possible and remove Timing Chain dampener bolt and Timing Chain dampener. Next, it is the removal of the camshaft sprocket bolt, followed by the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain; therefore, if the sprocket does not slip off, one may use a light strike on the lower edge with a plastic mallet. Go ahead to remove the Crankshaft sprocket and, if at all, balance shaft drive gear to gain access to the camshaft thrust plate and its bolts. Check all components for worn out or damaged items. It is important to rotate the Crankshaft if the pistons have been moved to bring the number one Piston to the top dead center and aligning the camshaft so that the timing mark is straight to the bottom with the sprocket placed temporarily. For installation if necessary after that install the balance shaft driven gear and stop the rotation of balance shaft with the securing bolt driven gear bolt to be 22 nm (16 ft. Lbs.) followed by rotating the bolt 70 degrees more by the use of the torque angle meter (J 45059). Install the camshaft thrust plate along with its fasteners tightened to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.), as well as the balance shaft drive gear. So align timing marks on the balance shaft drive gear, balance shaft driven gear then install the Crankshaft sprocket, Timing Chain, and sprocket such that the timing marks are as close as possible. Choke the camshaft sprocket bolt to 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.) and another 90degrees-up angle with help of the torque angle meter (J 45059). Last, but not least, replace the Timing Chain dampener along with its bolt, tighten it to 22 nm (16 ft. Lbs.), rotate the engine two revolutions to validate the alignment of the timing marks, and reinstall the front engine cover.
