  • Q: How to replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor on 2004 Chevrolet Malibu?
    A: To replace Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor you have to turn the ignition OFF, and also the engine coolant drained below the level of ECT sensor. Unplug the ECT sensor package and take off the ECT. Before installation tap out the sensor mounting hole in the engine head to remove any thread sealant residue, clean the old sensor and applying RTV sealant to the threads in case the old sensor is used. Apply thread sealant GM P/N 21485227, LOCTITE 242(r) Threadlocker, or the like to Sensor threads. Mount the ECT sensor and secure it with a torque of 20N.m (15 lb ft). Connect the ECT sensor harness connector again, making sure to click and pull back to ensure proper engagement. Make sure to fill the engine to the full level, adding the coolant if necessary, before turning it on.
