2004 Chevrolet Malibu Fan Shroud Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the cooling fan and fan shroud (L61) on 2004 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The replacement of the cooling fan together with shroud (L61) should begin with left and right headlamp removal. The upper transmission oil cooler pipe must stay attached between the Fan Shroud and transmission or Radiator but needs removing from the Fan Shroud. The upper two tabs on the condenser require each rope to be formed into loops which will secure them to the upper tie bar. Both upper Radiator support bracket bolts and supporting brackets need removal from the system. Lift the vehicle slightly and use upward force on the Fan Shroud tabs at the Radiator clips before taking off the lower Radiator air deflector retainers and lower Radiator air deflector. The first step includes fender liner removal from the right front followed by removal of right and left Radiator air deflector retainers and air deflectors. The procedure begins by unfastening the lower Radiator support bracket bolts then removing the brackets followed by disconnecting the fan wire harness connectors prior to taking out the Fan Shroud assembly. Completely install the Fan Shroud assembly with both Radiator air side seals properly bent to fit inside the intake air splash shields while ensuring they remain in the correct flow path. Fasten the lower Radiator support brackets by torquing the bolts to 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs.). Beginning with the fan wire harness connectors, install left and right Radiator air deflectors along with their retainers. Then install the right front fender liner followed by the lower Radiator air deflector and its retainers. Lower the vehicle to extend the Fan Shroud tabs into the Radiator clips before removing the rope from the condenser and upper tie bar. Install the upper Radiator support brackets but check the upper bracket stays untwisted during tightening before tightening the upper bracket bolts to 10 nm (7 ft. Lbs.). Position the upper transmission oil cooler pipe onto the shroud and reinstall both right and left headlamps.
