• Q: How to replace the water pump (L61) on 2004 Chevrolet Malibu?

  A: Pull out the Thermostat Housing bolt from the front engine area to start replacing the Water Pump (L61). First remove the plate covering the Water Pump then take the four wheel nuts and wheel from the right side before detaching the push-pins inside and the splash shield. Detach the thermistor connector from the Water Pump and remove all remaining coolant through the Drain Plug bottom location. Move the Thermostat Housing to one side by turning while maintaining connection between the coolant hoses and cover at the rear of the water feed pipe that is threaded onto the Water Pump assembly. at the same time, remove bolts holding the Thermostat Housing. Take out the water feed pipe and throw away its two sealing bands. Before working on the Water Pump sprocket and chain, add the Water Pump holding tool (J 43651), thread the tool bolts into the Water Pump sprocket's threads and tighten them to stability. Hold the Water Pump tool into the access cover bolts before you take off the Water Pump sprocket inner bolts and the Water Pump bolts which are three in total. Next unfasten the two Water Pump assembly bolts and two additional bolts at the pump's rear part. Remove the Water Pump parts plus o-ring seal from the system. Put a fresh Water Pump seal in place and make a guide pin by inserting an m6 m x 6 mm stud for alignment. Press the Water Pump assembly to the engine block using hand strength when you place and snug-tighten the engine block bolts. Install the inner Water Pump sprocket bolts and take out the guide pin once two bolts seat properly. Turn the Water Pump bolts to 25 nm and adjust the Water Pump sprocket-to-Water Pump bolts to 10 nm. Install the Water Pump access plate and its bolts into position before tightening them to 10 nm (89 inch lbs). Apply silicone gel to both water feed pipe seals and put a fresh o-ring seal on the pipe. If needed, place the Thermostat Housing to block seal over the damaged housing part. Put the water feed pipe into the Water Pump housing and push it until the Thermostat Housing becomes fully seated. Besides, place a new water feed o-ring seal. Put the Thermostat Housing in position against the engine base and install its block bolts at 10 nm (89 inch pounds). Reestablish power connection to the temperature sensor before installing the right-hand splash shield with push pins plus the tire assembly and its nuts which need 125nm (92 foot pounds) tightening. Lower the vehicle to first connect the thermostat pipe bracket to the cylinder head bolt and tighten it to 8 nm (71 inch lbs.). Then install and bolt on the exhaust manifold heat shield before tightening them to 23 nm (17 ft. Lbs.)). Please check that the vehicle stands straight during filling before you open the Radiator and Water Pump drains. After adding coolant you need to look for any fluid loss.
