2004 Chevrolet Venture Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2004 Chevrolet Venture?
A: First, to overhaul one of the rear Brake Calipers, take the brake caliper off, but do not insert fingers in front of the caliper piston or pistons while applying compressed air, as it can lead to the piston or pistons being ejected with considerable force, causing painful injuries, and if the piston of the right brake caliper is not available, check if the brake fluid needs to be drained off before taking it out. Before removing the pistons, use clean cloths to reach in and pad the interior of the caliper housing with just enough air to make the pistons easy to remove from the bores so as to prevent damage.. I suggest blowing compressed air into the brake caliper hole in a bid to remove the Brake Caliper Piston which will come out of the piston boot. Whether scoring, nicks, or corrosion appears, inspect and replace the Brake Caliper Piston if the chrome plating is worn/out of shape. Remove the dust boot retaining ring and with the use of flat-bladed tool remove the Brake Caliper Piston boot carefully without causing scaring of the housing bore and avoid metal tools from doing any consequent damage. Use a small wooden plate or plastic tool to remove the piston seal from the groove of the caliper bore and examine the area of the caliper bore and seal grooves for scoring, nicks, corrosion or wear. Polish-off light corrosion with crocus cloth, otherwise, use crocus cloth to polish off light corrosion, replace the caliper if the corrosion surrounding the seal groove cannot be cleared out. Examine the seal groove looking for nicks or burr and replace the caliper if it is destroyed. Inspect and fit replacement for any Brake Caliper Bolt pin boot with cuts, tears or deterioration, check on the brake caliper bolts for corrosion or damage, replacing the corroded bolts. Remove the brake caliper housing bleeder valve cap and open the brake caliper housing bleeder valve then clean parts with denatured alcohol, followed by drying with filtered non-lubricated compressed air. Utilize filtered and non-lubricated compressed air for the purpose of blowing all the passages of the caliper housing, and bleeder valve. For assembly, install the bleeder valve and the cap back to the caliper housing and slip a new lubricated piston seal into the caliper bore groove without twisting. Slip on the lubricated piston boot onto the Brake Caliper Piston, lubricate the piston with clean brake fluid and push the piston into the caliper bore to the bottom with the boot attached. Secure the dust boot with retaining ring and finally the brake caliper.
