2004 GMC Sierra 1500 Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front crankshaft seal on 2004 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: The process of changing the crankshaft front oil seal starts by removing the crankshaft balancer followed by extracting the oil seal from the front cover. The process requires both abstaining from lubricating the oil seal sealing surface and avoiding reuse of the crankshaft oil seal. The process starts with applying clean engine oil to both the border of the new oil seal and front cover oil seal bore. Start by putting the Crankshaft Front Oil Seal onto Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (J 41478) guide. The threaded rod J 41478 (including nut, washer, guide, and oil seal) needs insertion into the crankshaft end before using the J 41478 to position the oil seal in the cover bore. Maintain pressure on the installer bolt hex by using a wrench which allows you to rotate the installer nut in a clockwise direction until the seal completely enters the cover bore. You should check the front cover bore after installation to verify that the J 41478 and oil seal installed with uniformity into their designated bore position. Finally, reinstall the crankshaft balancer.
