- Q: What tools are required to service and repair the CV Joint Boot for the Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint and Seal Replacement on 2005 Buick LaCrosse?A: The tools required for servicing and repairing the constant velocity joint boot (manufacture of Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint and also the Seal Replacement are) as follows: snap ring pliers (J8059), seal clamp tool (J35910), drive axle swage ring clamp (J41048). After that, remove the large seal retaining clamp from the CV Joint using a side cutter and dispose of it. Use a hand grinder to remove the swage ring. Cut through the swage ring with the hand grinder in order to remove it. Lift the halfshaft outboard seal from the CV Joint outer race at the large diameter and the seal off from the side towards the halfshaft bar. Wipe the grease off of the face of the CV Joint inner race; then move the ears of the race-retaining rings with the snap ring pliers (J8059), then take off the CV Joint assembly from the halfshaft bar. Discard the old outboard seal and install a brass drift and with gentle taps tilt the CV Joint cage out to remove the chrome alloy balls till all the six of them are removed. Clean the inner and outer race assemblies, the CV Joint cage and the chrome alloy balls by swabbing with cleaning solvent making sure all oil and contaminants are removed, then dry all parts and inspect the CV Joint assembly for unusual wear or cracks/damage and replace any damaged parts. Use a wire brush to clean the halfshaft bar and clean out rust where the seal mounts. For installation, install a new swage ring to the neck of the outboard seal, but don't swage, and make the outboard seal slip onto the halfshaft bar (putting it in the seal groove). Swarf the ring with drive axle swage ring clamp (J41048) through aligning and locking of the halves, and inserting the bolts then tightening. Inspect the swaged ring for deformities and re-swage if needed. Apply a light coat of grease from the service kit on the ball grooves of the inner and outer races, then place the inner race into the cage through it aligning with the outer race. Mount the chrome balls, packing the CV Joint with grease and making sure that the outboard seal is shaped as needed. Lastly, slide the large diameter of the outboard seal with the large seal retaining clamp over the CV Joint outer race and crimp the clamp to the specified torque using the seal clamp tool (J35910) and measure the gap dimension on the clamp ear until the required measurement is obtained.
