- Q: How to Service and Repair the CV Joint Boot on 2006 Buick LaCrosse?A: Starting with the CV Joint boot, to service and repair it start picking up the necessary tools. J 41048 drive axle swage ring clamp, j 8059 snap ring pliers, and j 35910 drive axle seal clamp pliers. Cut off the large seal retaining clamp off the CV Joint using a side cutter and throw it away. Do not cut through the front of an inboard wheel drive shaft seal in order to avoid damage to the sealing surface. Grind off the swage ring for removal using a hand grinder. Take the halfshaft outboard seal out of the CV Joint outer race and push the seal back from the joint on the halfshaft bar. Clean the CV Joint inner race and spread the ears on the race retaining ring with j 8059 before the removal of CV Joint assembly from the halfshaft bar. Toss out the old outboard seal and with a brass drift carefully tap and tilt the CV Joint cage to frankly discharge all six chrome alloy balls. Ensure the cleaning of the inners and outers race assemblies, the CV Joint cage, and the chrome alloy balls using the cleaning solvent thing and then dry the parts and inspect them for big us unusual or scratch or damage and replace the damages parts. Clean the halfshaft bar using a wire brush to remove the rust there in the seal mounting area. Assemble a new swage ring or eared clamp to the neck of outboard seal without swaging or crimping. Produce the outboard seal to the halfshaft bar ensuring it slides into the seal groove. For swage ring installation, position it using j 41048 to tighten the swage ring aligned, look for deformities, and re-swage if needed. For eared clamp installation, place the halfshafts in a vise, and replace the eared clamp with a new one using j35910, a breaker bar and a torque wrench of 136 nm (100 ft. Lbs.). And insert the inner race into a cage and align it with the outer race and ensure the retaining ring side faces the halfshaft bar. Mount the chrome balls, pack the CV Joint with grease, and drive the CV Joint over the halfshaft bar up to the retaining rings seated. Make sure the outboard seal is shaped correctly, crimp the large seal retaining clamp to the value specified in j 35910 to 174 nm (130 ft. Lbs.) and control the gap dimension on the clamp ear tightening until the required 1.9 mm (5/64 inch) is reached.
