2005 Buick Park Avenue Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What does the service of the engine control module (ECM) typically involve on 2005 Buick Park Avenue?
A: Service of the powertrain control module (PCM) requires the replacement of the pcm unit while programming the electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) remains an alternative procedure. Ensure that the new pcm matches the correct specifications before performing an installation. Install the new service pcm after removal of the faulty unit and this unprogrammed part needs to be programmed before use. The powertrain control module shows a p0602 diagnostic trouble code when eeprom is either unprogrammed or malfunctioning. The connector pins and circuit board soldered components should not receive any manual contact to avoid electrostatic discharge damage on the system. Any maintenance on pcm connectors or the removal of power sources including Battery Cable and pcm pigtail and pcm Fuse and jumper cables must be performed with the ignition set to off. First obtain the engine oil lifetime percentage using a scan tool before replacing the module because non-programmed data will reset to 100% and trigger an oil change in 5000 km (3,000 mi). First disconnect the negative Battery Cable before taking out screws and air cleaner top cover. Then disconnect the harness connectors from the pcm and fully remove the pcm from the air cleaner housing assembly. The pcm attaches first with connector connections that must be tightened to 8 n.m (71 lb in). Next install the pcm into the air cleaner housing assembly and put on the air cleaner top cover before reconnected the negative Battery Cable. After installation the replacement pcm will only start secondary air injection (AIR) pump functions after reaching 16.9 km (10 miles) of total driving distance followed by a mandatory programming step.
