2005 Buick Park Avenue Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the steering knuckle on 2005 Buick Park Avenue?
A: You must first elevate the vehicle before supporting it then take off the tire and wheel. Use a drift or screwdriver inside the caliper and rotor to stop their rotation before you remove the drive axle nut and brake rotor. Use a screwdriver to disconnect the Wheel Speed Sensor connector then free the Wheel Bearing and hub retaining bolts. Use the front/rear spindle remover (J 28733-B) tool to separate the hub and drive axle from the assembly while using the steering linkage and Tie Rod puller (J 24319-B) to detach the Tie Rod from the Steering Knuckle. Use the Ball Joint separator (J 43828) to split the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle while you remove the Steering Knuckle after unscrewing the front strut to Steering Knuckle retaining bolts and dust shield. Installation begins with fitting the new Steering Knuckle and the lower Ball Joint together before torquing down the lower Ball Joint retaining nut with its accompanying cotter pin. Use 10 nm (88 inch lbs.) torque on the knuckle nut with an additional 150 degrees-300 degrees (3-5 flats) while checking that the cotter pin stays properly aligned before you stop tightening the nut. Install the outer Tie Rod onto the Steering Knuckle before securing it with an outer Tie Rod retaining nut torqued to 30 nm along with 180 degrees additional rotation and finally reinstall the dust shield. Position the hub and bearing onto the Steering Knuckle and drive axle before torquing the hub and bearing retaining bolts to 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.). Next install the rotor and the caliper support bracket/caliper assembly after connecting the Wheel Speed Sensor connector. The axle drive nut must be installed after ensuring the rotor stays stationary and should be tightened to 160 nm (118 ft. Lbs.) so the tire and wheel can be reinstalled.
