- Q: How to replace the primary cam gear and timing chain on 2005 Cadillac DeVille?A: To change the timing chain and sprockets, first, accumulate the instruments, for instance, the crankshaft socket-4.0l and 4.6l (J 39946). Start by pulling out the Oil Pump then align the timing marks with the use of the j 39946. Then, unscrew the secondary timing chains and the timing chain tensioner and then remove the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt. Remove the timing chain, the crankshaft sprocket, and the camshaft intermediate sprocket all together. Clean and examine the camshaft timing drive components prior to installation. Make the timing marks of the camshaft intermediate and the crankshaft sprocket fit vertically in installed conditions and install a timing chain on the drive sprockets. Make sure that the no.1 piston is at top dead centre (TDC) and crankshaft key is on the 1 o'clock position while using the j 39946 in adjusting the key in line with the drive sprocket. Fit the main timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, and camshaft intermediate sprocket, but attach camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt and tighten to 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs.). Don't take out the pin attaching the tensioner before the secondary timing chains are installed, install the timing chain tensioner and then the secondary timing chains. Last, remove the pin from the timing chain tensioner release lever, see if the timing marks are vertically arranged, and install the Oil Pump.
