2005 Cadillac STS Steering Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2005 Cadillac STS?
A: Before installing the intermediate Steering Shaft make sure both wheels are straight while positioning the Steering Column in lock to protect the sir coil assembly from misalignment damage. Begin by inserting the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J42640) through the opening in the lower Steering Column trim cover to securely lock the column. First raise your vehicle before disconnecting the upper to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt alongside the lower intermediate shaft to power steering gear retaining bolt. Remove the lower intermediate shaft from its connection with the power steering gear while keeping track of the layout between center and upper components to guide reinstallation. Use a hoist to detach the center intermediate shaft that remains connected with its lower counterpart before removing their retaining bolt to separate these shafts. First install the lower intermediate shaft onto the upper intermediate shaft before installing its lower to center intermediate shaft retaining bolt at 30 nm torque (23 ft. Lbs.). Tighten all bolted connections starting with the center to upper intermediate shaft retaining bolt to 30 nm (23 ft. Lbs.). Ensure the orientation of intermediate shafts matches factory settings recorded during disassembly before connecting components together. Install the lower intermediate shaft to power steering gear retaining bolt while tightening it to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Lower the vehicle while you extract the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J42640) from the access hole of the lower trim cover.
