  • Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on a 3.8L engine on 2005 Chevrolet Impala?
A: Before replacing the vacuum Brake Booster on a 3.8l engine, make sure you have gathered everything you need: power Brake Booster holder (J 22805-B). Turn off the battery's negative cable and take out the insulator from the left side of the instrument panel. After that, disconnect the stop lamp switch wire and pull off the retaining clip so you can remove the Brake Booster pushrod from the Brake Pedal. Remove both the cross vehicle brace and the fuel injector sight shield before you separate the brake fluid level sensor electrical connector. Make sure not to detach the brake pipes from the master cylinder and brake pressure modulator valve. Alternatively, you should remove both master cylinder bolts and put the master cylinder to the side. Remove the vacuum Brake Booster check valve and keep the vacuum hose and the check valve attached. Start disconnecting the throttle and cruise control cables from the Throttle Body, and afterward, take out the throttle bracket along with the Throttle Cable and cruise control cable as one piece. Lift the engine forward to gain better reaching, and then take out the EGR Valve wiring harness heat shield and the EGR Valve. Pull the transmission fluid filler tube bracket retainer off and keep the filler tube out of the way. Put the power Brake Booster holder (J 22805-B) onto the booster using the master cylinder retaining nuts, loosen the booster from the front of the cowl using a flat-bladed tool to hold down the Brake Booster locking tab while turning the booster counterclockwise with a ratchet on the power brake bo take off the vacuum Brake Booster, and then take off power Brake Booster holder (J 22805-B). Make sure the new vacuum Brake Booster is pushed onto the cowl counterclockwise, lining up the locking flanges, and make sure both the locking tab and flanges are seated properly before tightening the booster clockwise with the ratchet on the power Brake Booster holder (J 22805-B). Take the power Brake Booster holder (J 22805-B) off from the mounted booster, then put the transmission fluid filler tube bracket retainer in place and realign the filler tube. Put the EGR Valve and the wiring harness heat shield for the EGR Valve into place, and make sure to tighten the nut and bolt to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Bring the engine back to its original place and secure both left and right engine mount struts. Put the throttle bracket and cables back onto the Throttle Body, and then attach both the throttle and cruise control cables. Put the vacuum hose and check valve assembly back onto the booster, match up the master cylinder, and fasten the nuts with 33 nm (24 ft. Lbs.) of torque. Then, attach the brake fluid level sensor electrical connector, put on the fuel injector sight shield, mount the cross vehicle brace, connect the Brake Booster pushrod to the Brake Pedal using the clip, link the stop lamp switch connector, put the left instrument panel insulator back in place, and reconnect the negative Battery Cable.
