2004 Chevrolet Impala Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on a 3.8L engine on 2004 Chevrolet Impala?
A: You start replacement of the vacuum Brake Booster on a 3.8l engine by locking the booster with master cylinder retaining nuts using a power Brake Booster holder (J 22805-B). Keep the cruise control cable apart from the booster and cowl to prevent damage. Return the stop lamp electrical connector and remove the Brake Booster pushrod from its position at the pedal while taking off the retaining clip. You need to remove the cross vehicle brace and the fuel injector sight shield before disconnecting the electrical connection of the Brake Fluid Level Sensor. The brake pipes do not need to be detached from the master cylinder to the brake pressure modulator valve during service. Take off the two hold-down nuts from the master cylinder and place the unit aside. Install the vacuum Brake Booster check valve in its normal position with attached hose. Disconnect throttle and cruise control cables from Throttle Body then take off the throttle bracket together with Throttle Cable and cruise control cable. Reposition the engine to reach the backside securely before taking off heat shields from egr wiring harness and then the valve itself. Unfasten the transmission filler tube bracket retainer and put the filler tube somewhere safe. Press the Brake Booster locking tab with a flat-bladed tool and turn the booster to the left using a ratchet on the power Brake Booster holder (J 22805-B). Take the vacuum Brake Booster off its position last. Install the vacuum Brake Booster on the cowl with the locking flanges engaged and fit the power Brake Booster holder (J 22805-B) over it for clockwise turning without using flat-bladed tools. Reinstall the transmission filler tube fixtures following verification of the locking tab status before taking off the power Brake Booster holder (J 22805-B). Reassemble the EGR Valve by placing its heat shield wiring harness in position then fasten the retaining bolt and nut to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Place your engine back into its original position and set up the throttle bracket along with its cables onto the Throttle Body. Secure the throttle and cruise control wires to their locations while reinstalling the vacuum hose and its connecting parts to the power Brake Booster. Put the master cylinder back on top of the booster and fasten the holding nuts before turning them to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Plug the brake fluid sensor into its power connection, put back the fuel injector sight shield and cross vehicle brace. Finish by installing the brake pushrod into the Brake Pedal and placing on the retaining clip. Also attach the stop lamp switch electrical connector and return the left panel insulator.
