  • Q: How to Replace the Front Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2005 Chevrolet Malibu?
    A: To remove the Rack And Pinion, turn the Steering Wheel to its straight forward condition and lock it, then remove the ignition key. Lift up the vehicle and remove the front tires and wheels. Next, take off the intermediate shaft to Rack And Pinion pinch bolt (J 24319-B) and throw it away while keeping the Steering Wheel in a straight forward position to avoid damaging the sir coil. Remove the intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion, now take off the tie rod end castle nuts without pickle fork or wedge ish tool to ensure not to damage the seal of the bushing. Take out the link tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using the j 24319-b, removing the rear transmission mount to transmission bolt and the Rack And Pinion to frame bolts. Feeling the Rack And Pinion, live to the left side of the vehicle to reset it at 90o to clear rear transmission mount. When replacing the Rack And Pinion, take off the outer tie rod ends. For installation, install the outer tie rod ends to the Rack And Pinion, then install the vehicle's Rack And Pinion making sure to rotate as required to clear the rear transmission mount. Choose the right fasteners and install them in the right locations and replace the damaged fasteners while following the part number for the use. Tighten the Rack And Pinion to frame bolts to 70 nm (52 lb ft) with an additional 90 degree; then tighten the rear transmission mount-to-transmission bolt to 90 nm (66 lb ft). Restart the connection of the intermediate Steering Shaft to the Rack And Pinion and place a new intermediate Steering Shaft to Rack And Pinion pinch bolt and tighten it up to 49 nm (36 lb ft). Put the outer tie rod ends into the steering knuckles and keep the ball stud from rotating as you install new torque castle nuts, tightening them to a torque of 60 nm (44 lb ft). Lastly, reinstall the front tires and wheels and then lower the vehicle and measure for the wheel alignment adjusting if necessary.
