2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake line using the J 45405 Pipe Flaring Tool Kit on 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: To change the brake pipe, use the J 45405 Pipe Flaring Tool Kit (J 45405) and make sure that double-walled steel brake pipe is used to avoid failure of a brake system. Start by checking the area of the brake pipe you intend to change and loose it from retainers as necessary. In addition to the actual length of the pipe that needs to be changed, measure the length of the pipes with the bends in them and account for the required length of flares which is 6.35mm (0.250 inch) for 4.76mm (3/16 inch) diameter pipe. Render the brake pipe to size by means of the pipe cutter in J 45405. Choose the correct size of brakes pipe and tube nuts, remove the nylon coating strips in the end to flare using the end stripping tool provided in the J 45405, and chamfer the inside and outside diameter of the pipe with the de-burring tool attached to the J 45405. Install tube nuts to brake pipe, clean the pipe and the J 45405 of any foreign substance, and loose the die clamping screw of J 45405. Mount the corresponding die set on the die cage, place prepared end of pipe to be flared, make sure that the dies are seated well and tighten the clamping screw. Choose the right forming mandrel, activate the lever of the J 45405 to produce the flare, take off the dies and pipe. Check the flare for proper shape and diameter (7.10 mm / 0.279 inch ±0.18mm / 0.007 inch for 4.76 mm / 3/16 inch diameter pipe). Shapenew pipe when necessary, have a clearance of 19 mm (3/4 inch) from moving components, install the pipe with appropriate unions, secure it to retainers, bleed hydraulic brake system, and in the end to check for leaks by turning on the engine and applying the brakes with assistance.
