2005 Chevrolet Tahoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Rear Brake Calipers for the 2500 Series on 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe?
A: Service and repair of the 2500 series rear brake caliper requires you to replace all supplied components while lubricating rubber parts with clean brake fluid to simplify assembly. The torque specifications should reflect dry and non-lubricated conditions and all repair work must take place on a clean bench which contains no mineral oil materials. The brake caliper removal process requires caution because compressed air application in front of the Piston might result in severe wounds. A thin wooden implement helps protect components while compressed air removes pistons by targeting the inlet fitting of the brake hose. Move both pistons together with the Piston boots and Piston seals from the brake caliper before you detach its bleed screw cap and screw. Check the brake caliper bores together with Piston seal grooves for both scoring and corrosion damage. The brake caliper housing must be replaced when excessive damage becomes evident. The braking system shows poor condition if contamination affects the brake caliper mounting bracket guide surfaces so you should get a new bracket. The brake pad guiding surfaces of brake caliper housings and mounting brackets should receive complete residue removal followed by denatured alcohol cleaning of repair kit excluded parts which then require drying using non-lubricated filtered compressed air. Use compressed air to evacuate all passages within the brake caliper housing as well as the bleeder valve. In order to install the brake caliper complete its assembly process start by tightening the bleed screw to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) and securing the bleed screw cap. The new Piston seal and brake caliper bore seal groove should receive a lubrication treatment with brake fluid before final installation when the seal remains untwisted. Apply brake fluid to the brake caliper bore and Piston before placing the boot across the Piston end with its fold pointing towards the brake caliper housing Piston bore opening. Slide the Piston into the bore through the boot's entrance in the groove. Push the Piston to the bore's lowest point repeatedly to confirm proper boot seating occurs between the Piston groove and the brake caliper bore groove. Perform this step for all remaining pistons. Install the brake caliper back on the vehicle prior to finishing the installation process.
