- Q: How to replace the starter motor on 2005 GMC Savana 2500?A: Start by disconnecting the vehicle's negative Battery Cable before securely raising it then proceeding with replacement. Before you can start the replacement, remove the right transmission cover bolt together with Starter bolts before disconnecting the oil level sensor electrical connector. Slide the Starter forward until it passes by the transmission area and remove the Starter solenoid nut and both Starter leads including the nut from the solenoid stud. After removing the positive cable from the Starter stud you should place the Starter on a workbench. After removing the transmission cover from the Starter you should also detach any Starter shields. Reconnect the positive cable to its Starter stud before moving onto slip in the Starter shield. After that, secure the transmission cover back onto the Starter unit. Reinstall the positive cable to the Starter stud before tightening the Starter lead nut to 10 n.m (89 lb in). Securely screw the Starter solenoid nut around the solenoid stud using 3.4 n.m (30 lb in) torque. Using a socket wrench insert the Starter bolts while applying a torque of 50 n.m (37 lb ft). Mount the right transmission cover bolt and tighten it to 9 n.m (80 lb in) while retaping the oil level sensor electrical connector. Finish the process by dropping the vehicle before securing the negative Battery Cable.
