First punch two holes at 50 mm (2 inch) from the top and 25 mm (1 inch) from the bottom of the tube using a centerpunch. Install the shock absorber inside the vise so the rod remains extended at a horizontal position. A 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit should be used to drill a hole at the first centerpunch mark; the escaping fluid will cause gas or gas/oil mixture to exhaust so shop towels should be used to contain the oil. A second hole should be drilled at the second centerpunch location where oil will escape so the process is repeated with shop towels to absorb the released oil. After extracting the shock absorber from the vise position it horizontally above a drain pan with its holes directed downwards before operating the rod through the tubes to let all the oil drain out.
