- Q: How to replace the front (right) CV Joint inner joint and seal on 2006 Cadillac STS?A: The replacement of front (right) wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal requires three essential tools consisting of Snap Ring Pliers (J8059) and Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J35566, J42572). Set the shop towel around the wheel drive shaft bar before putting it in a vertical position inside a bench vise. Dispatch the small seal clamp from the wheel drive shaft bar with side cutters and dispose of it right away. The J35566 J35566 tool can unfurl the large clamp that holds the seal and you should discard the large seal clamp from the tripot joint after removal. Dismantle the wheel drive shaft inboard seal from the trilobal tripot bushing while moving it along the wheel drive shaft bar. Before disassembly note down the tripot spider position on the wheel drive shaft bar and separate the housing from both components. The J8059 will remove the retaining ring before you use a brass drift and hammer to carefully strike the tripot spider face off the wheel drive shaft bar. Check the wheel drive shaft inboard seal combined with the tripot joint spider assembly and housing as well as the trilobal tripot bushing for signs of wear or damage. The new small seal clamp goes onto the small end of the joint seal before inserting the joint seal and small seal clamp into the boot groove of the wheel drive shaft bar. Position the small end of the joint seal into its respective joint seal groove. The J42572 tool should be used to crimp the small seal retaining clamp into a 1 mm (0.039 inch) gap at the omega ohm base for a minimum 2-second hold time. Place the tripot spider on the wheel drive shaft bar with the reference mark oriented as before for reused spindles while keeping the beveled edge aimed at the wheel drive shaft bar. Add a new retaining ring through the use of J8059 tool to make sure the tripot spider locks into position securely. Put half the service kit grease inside the wheel drive shaft inboard seal before distributing the rest throughout the housing. Insert a trilobal tripot bushing into the housing prior to placing the larger new seal retaining clamp against the wheel drive shaft inboard seal. After that position the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly. Check that the wide part of the wheel drive shaft inboard seal fits correctly inside the groove before inspecting its proper shape. Keep the seal edges at 104.7 mm (4.12 inch) distance before joining the wheel drive shaft inboard seal, tripot housing and large seal retaining clamp. The J35566 tool helps to secure the large seal retaining clamp until its latching tangs fully interact. Following seal retention, you should rotate the inner tripot housing four to five times to spread the grease evenly across the spider bearings.
