- Q: What tools are needed to service and repair the CV Boot and CV Joint for the Front Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Seal Replacement (Left) on 2007 Cadillac STS?A: Some of the tools required to service & repair the constant Velocity Joint Boot, in particular the Front- Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint, Role, and Seal Replacement (Left include); Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059), Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566), and Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572). Start by wrapping a shop towel around the wheel drive shaft bar and clamping it horizontally into a bench vise. Cut the small seal clamp with side cutters and throw it away. Push down the large seal retaining clamp using Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) and remove it from tripot joint. Remove the separation of the inboard seal from the trilobal tripot bushing and slide it away from the joint. Unmount the tripot joint spider and the wheel drive shaft bar, and dispose of old retaining ring using the Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059). Mark the tripot spider at the wheel drive shaft bar just in case you are going to disassemble it, and then tap around the tripot spider face gently with a brass drift attached to a hammer to take it out. Check the wheel drive shaft inboard seal, tripot joint spider assembly, housing and trilobal tripot bushing for damage. Apply a new small seal clamp toward the small end of the inner joint seal; slide it into the boot groove and align the groove of the innver joint seal. Crimp the small seal retaining clamp using the Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572) and it should be done making sure it has 1 mm gap. When reusing the tripot spider, align the reference mark and make sure the beveled edge is directed towards the wheel drive shaft bar when reassembling the unit. Install the tripot spider 89164557 and a new retaining ring 10330710 with the help of the Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) while ensuring it is engaged. Machine shaft drive grease inboard seal and repacking the housing followed by a trilobal tripot bushing. Place the larger new seal retaining clamp onto the wheel drive shaft inboard seal, slide the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly, and make sure that the seal is shaped correctly. Make a measurement of the distance between the edges of the seal to 104.7 mm (4.12 in), expel the air from the inner joint seal, align the wheel drive shaft inboard seal, tripot housing and large seal retaining clamp before tightly latching with Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566). Lastly, several rotation of the inner tripot housing will be performed so that the grease can be spread to all of the bearings of the tripot spider.
