To change rear wheel drive shaft inner joint and boot you need the set of tools: drive shaft seal clamp pliers (J 42572). Start by lining a shop towel around the Axle Shaft and placing the horizontal wheel drive shaft on the bench vise. Remove and dispose of the large and small seal retaining clamps from the joint seal with the help of a side cutter or like now. Remove the seal from inner joint outer race at the large diameter end and move aside from joint face. Now we clean the inner race of the joint, its cage and balls from the grease. To pull off the inner joint from the Axle Shaft, pick it up horizontally and place a brass drift on the inner race, then hit it with a hammer to compress the Axle Shaft retaining clip, keep striking till the inner joint comes off. Remove the Axle Shaft retaining ring and discard it as well as remove the seal off the Axle Shaft. Clean the inner race, outer race, cage, balls, and the exposed end of the Axle Shaft with clean solvent and blow all parts till they are air dried. Check on these components to ensure there is no damage or wear. For assembly, it is advisable to add about 60 pre cent from the service kit in the inner joint, spreading it around the ball tracks, balls and cage, inner race, followed by spreading the balance in the bottom of the outer race. Wear a shop towel around the Axle Shaft install a new small seal retaining clamp to the Axle Shaft and put on the seal and new retaining ring then set the wheel drive shaft before a bench vise flat for a change. Push the inner race splines over the Axle Shaft splines, transfer the compression of the Axle Shaft ring spacer, and press the end of the retaining ring down into the Axle Shaft groove as you press the inner joint onto the Axle Shaft with force. Drive the inner joint onto the shaft with a wood block and hammer until it's fully seated. Place the small seal retaining clamp into the boot, then putting the seal and small retaining clamp to the boot groove in the Axle Shaft of the wheel. Using the drive shaft seal clamp pliers (J 42572), crimp the small seal retaining clamp with a base gap of 1 mm(0.039 in) at the base of the omega ohm shape. Place the remaining grease for the service kit into the seal, placing the large seal retaining clamp upon the seal, after which place the seal and large retaining clamp up to the joint outer race. Take the measurement between the seal edges to confirm that it is seeing 86.85mm (3.42 in) and inspect the seal to make sure it is in proper shape and is not damaged, and discard it and replace it if needed. Crimp the large seal retaining clamp using the drive shaft seal clamp pliers (J 42572) to which there should be a base of 1 mm(0.039 in) at the base of the omega ohm shape. Finally, check the inner joint for working condition by holding the wheel drive shaft vertically and rotate it 4 or 5 times before wheel drive shaft installation.
