2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear parking brake cable on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: You must start your repair of the rear park brake cable by taking out the front floor console while fully releasing the park brake lever. Cable tension release from the park brake cables can begin by using hand tools to loosen the adjusting nut which controls the front cable threaded rod. To reach the rear park brake cables and grommets you must first take out the rear seat lower cushion and carpet retainers and push the carpet toward the front section. The necessary procedure starts by using the park brake lever release to detach one rear brake cable end from the cable equalizer and take off the rear cable fitting from the lever bracket prior to uninstalling the cable from the assembly. After releasing the park brake cable body pass-thru grommet the vehicle needs to be elevated. The process for cable management differs between new and reuse installations. Users should release the underbody retainer tab to remove the cable unless they replace it with a new one. Use a tool to remove the c-shaped retainer carefully from the cable which runs between the bracket at the rear axle trailing arm pivot before removing the cable from underneath the vehicle. Detach the park brake cable end from the caliper park brake lever by removing the rear tire and wheel assembly and use a flat-bladed screwdriver to depress the retaining tabs on the park brake cable fitting to remove it from the cable bracket. Unbolt the guide retaining bolt from the park brake cable then extract the cable from its installation. To install the new park brake cable you should guide it through the caliper bracket and lock it in place with the rear park brake cable guide retaining bolt while torquing it to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Secure the cable fitting to the cable bracket by letting the retaining tabs fully insert then join the cable end to the caliper park brake lever. Feed the cable through the vehicle underbody opening before attaching the c-shaped retainer to its placement on the rear axle trailing arm pivot. The vehicle underbody opening should have the park brake cable pass-thru grommet secured in place. When adding a new cable you must attach the underbody retainer to the vehicle structure while retaining wire cables need installation between underbody retainer and then tab insertion. Lower the vehicle while making sure retaining tabs stay in place when connecting the cable fitting to the park brake lever bracket. Secure the cable end to the cable equalizer and then the carpet needs to be repositioned with the rear carpet retainers and rear seat lower cushion replacement. The last step involves adjusting the park brake cable tension before reinstallation of the front floor console.
