2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear parking brake cable on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: The first step to replace the rear park brake cable starts with floor console removal together with full release of the park brake lever. Only hand tools should be used to loosen the front cable threaded rod adjusting nut for releasing tension from park brake cables. The installer should position the carpet forward to gain access to the rear park brake cables and body pass-thru grommets after removing the rear seat lower cushion and rear carpet retainers. Only when the lever has been released should you remove each rear park brake cable end to detach its connection at the equalizer while releasing the bracket attachment for the rear fitting before the cables can be extracted from the lever assembly. After opening the rear park brake cable body pass-thru grommet you should elevate the vehicle. Before cable extraction, users should release the tab on the underbody retainer; but during new cable installation they should detach the underbody retainer from the vehicle. Detach the c-shaped retainer from the cable at the rear axle trailing arm pivot while avoiding cable tension, then pull out the cable from under the vehicle. To remove the rear tire and wheel assembly you must first detach the park brake cable end from the caliper park brake lever then depress the retaining tabs on the park brake cable fitting with a flat-bladed screwdriver to break it from the cable bracket. Starting with the removal of retaining bolt securing the park brake cable guide leads to the extraction of the cable. To install the new park brake cable first pass it through the cable bracket of the caliper then install the rear park brake cable guide retaining bolt while tightening it to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Connect the end of the cable to the caliper park brake lever before you can place the cable fitting onto the cable bracket with the retaining tabs securely seated. Install the rear tire and wheel assembly then guide the cable through the vehicle underbody opening until it reaches the c-shaped retainer which should be mounted at the rear axle trailing arm pivot. Implement the park brake cable pass-thru grommet onto the vehicle underbody opening, then fasten the underbody retainer using a new cable before attaching it to the vehicle or establish the cable connection to the underbody retainer if reusing by pressing down the tab. Position the vehicle at a lower height then attach the cable fitting to the park brake lever bracket where both retaining tabs maintain proper security. Connect the cable end to the cable equalizer before you reposition the carpet that needs reinstalling of the rear carpet retainers and rear seat lower cushion. Set the appropriate tension for the park brake cable before putting back the front floor console.
