2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear parking brake cable on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: A replacement of the rear park brake cable begins with taking out the front floor console while allowing the park brake lever to completely release. The removing of full tension from park brake cables can be achieved by completely loosening the adjusting nut. The next step involves taking out the rear seat lower cushion combined with the rear carpet retainers before moving the carpet forward to reach both rear park brake cables and body pass-thru grommets. After releasing the park brake lever the appropriate end of the rear cable should be disconnected from the cable equalizer and the rear fitting needs to be released from the park brake lever bracket prior to removing the cable from the lever assembly. You should first unlock the rear park brake cable body pass-thru grommet before lifting the vehicle. When reusing the park brake cable users must first free the tab found on the underbody retainer but must detach this component from the vehicle before installing a new cable. Remove the cable from the vehicle underbody by carefully prying the c-shaped retainer off the cable in a way that prevents cable tension. The operator should remove the rear tire followed by disconnecting the park brake cable end from the caliper park brake lever while using a screwdriver to depress retaining tabs on the cable fitting for separation from the cable bracket. Unscrew the park brake cable guide retaining bolt while pulling out the cable from the overall structure. Secure the new park brake cable into its cable bracket through the caliper using the rear park brake cable guide retaining bolt which needs to be tightened to 10 n.m (89 lb in). The cable bracket must have strong retaining tabs engaged before attaching the cable fitting and its connection to the caliper park brake lever. Install the rear tire and wheel assembly followed by putting the cable through the vehicle underbody opening then fasten the c-shaped retainer onto the bracket at the rear axle trailing arm pivot. Position the drive side park brake cable pass-thru grommet into the open underneath section of the vehicle and cover it with a secure retainer. A new cable requires fixing the underbody retainer to the vehicle but if the cable is reused the installation order begins with attaching it to the retainer and pressing the tab securely. Drop the vehicle onto the ground while fixing the cable fitting to the park brake lever bracket with retained tabs locked into position. First route the cable end to the cable equalizer then replace carpeting before reinstalling rear carpet retainers and rear seat lower cushions. The final installation steps require adjustment of the park brake cable tension followed by reinstallation of the front floor console.
