2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Thermostat Housing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the thermostat housing (RPO LE5) on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: The Thermostat housing replacement (RPO LE5) begins with intake manifold cover removal and then draining the cooling system through the drain at the Water Pump base. Tighten the drain bolt afterward. A technician should detent the vehicle then cut power to the ect sensor electrical connection for automatic transaxles but disconnect power to the ect sensor through manual transaxles. Begin by disconnecting the heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector clip from the Thermostat housing but you can also remove the ect sensor if needed. Apart from the Thermostat cover and oil cooler the radiator surge tank outlet hose clamps need repositioning before removing the hose from both sides. Apply a clamp to reposition the radiator outlet hose at the Thermostat location. Then remove the radiator outlet hose. Before heater inlet and outlet hoses disconnect you must remove Exhaust Heat Shield studs with the shield and relocate Thermostat housing pipe hose clamps. Lift the vehicle before you take out Thermostat housing bolts. Rotate the water transfer pipe and pull it out from the Water Pump assembly before removing the Thermostat component. You should detach the water transfer pipe from the Thermostat housing after discarding the o-ring seals when needed. Start by removing the Thermostat cover bolts and cover before you remove the Thermostat. Opt to discard both the Thermostat cover o-ring seal if needed. Before reinstalling the ect sensor housing, thoroughly discard all debris and thread sealant found in sensor and bolt holes. Place a new Thermostat cover o-ring seal into the recess groove before installing the Thermostat while applying 10 nm torque to the bolts when tightening. The installation process starts by placing a new engine gasket onto the Thermostat housing. Position the assembly and apply a thin layer of coolant to the water feed pipe seals before you install new o-ring seals onto the water feed pipe. Before installation of the water feed pipe within the Thermostat housing locate the tab correctly while performing o-ring lubrication with coolant. Then line up the water pipe towards the Water Pump. Seal the water feed o-ring by pressing it inward toward the Water Pump before placing the Thermostat housing against the engine and tightening the bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Lower the vehicle and while connecting the heater inlet and outlet hoses to the Thermostat housing pipes position the hose clamps correctly. Screw and tighten the Exhaust Heat Shield studs at 22 nm torque setting (16 ft. Lbs.). Secure the radiator outlet hose to the Thermostat housing while placing its hose clamps where they belong. Connect the surge tank outlet hose to the Thermostat cover and oil cooler before securing the clamps in position. When needed you can install the ect sensor while connecting the electrical connector according to your transaxle type. Fasten the ho2s electrical connector clip to the Thermostat housing while also ensuring vehicle level position while filling cooling system fluid and confirming that both drain valves at radiator and Water Pump remain closed. After the work is complete you must lower the vehicle for filling the cooling system and install the intake manifold cover.
