2006 Chevrolet Equinox Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2006 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: Before installing new timing components you need to remove the engine front cover before removing the camshaft sprocket bolt and subsequently removing the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain. Start by unscrewing the Timing Chain dampener bolts from the crankshaft sprocket. Afterwards, remove both the crankshaft sprocket and the Timing Chain dampener. Start by installing the crankshaft sprocket then put prelube gm p/n 12345501 (Canadian P/N 992704) or equivalent on the crankshaft sprocket thrust surface. Install the Timing Chain dampener after which make sure to torque its bolts to 21 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Position the timing mark of the crankshaft so it faces the timing mark located on the dampener's bottom edge. Install the Timing Chain to the crankshaft gear letting the camshaft sprocket hang below while centering the timing marks between the camshaft gear and top of the Timing Chain dampener. Use the mounting bolt to draw the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft while aligning the dowel in the camshaft to the dowel hole in the camshaft sprocket. Apply engine oil on both the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft then torque the bolt to 140 nm (103 ft. Lbs.). As the final step reattach the engine front cover.
