2006 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2006 Chevrolet HHR?
A: Begin the ecm replacement procedure by turning off the ignition first because you must avoid all contact with connector pins along with soldered components found on the circuit board. You need to protect against electrostatic discharge at all times. A scan tool should be used to record engine oil life since a failure to program replacement modules with this data will set the system to 100% which triggers an immediate oil change requirement after 5000 km (3,000 mi). Start your work by disconnecting the negative Battery Cable followed by the removal of the ecm/transaxle control module (TCM) cover. The removal process begins with disconnecting both the ecm's body harness electrical connector and engine harness electrical connector . At the same time remove the two retaining tabs located on the sides of the ecm/tcm bracket for access to the ecm . The metal casing of the control module must not touch battery voltage throughout service operations. You can install the ecm by sliding it into position in the ecm/tcm bracket until retaining tabs secure then connect engine harness electrical connector and body harness electrical connector to the ecm. Return the ecm/tcm cover to its position and restore the negative Battery Cable connection while performing necessary ecm programming.
