  Q: How to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM) on Chevrolet HHR?

  A: A proper Engine Control Module (ECM) replacement process starts with turning off the ignition to stop damage during the handling of connectors and power components that include the Battery Cable alongside the powertrain control module (PCM)/Engine Control Module (ECM)/transaxle control module (TCM) pigtail. During servicing avoid placing the control module metal case in contact with battery voltage because this will lead to electrostatic damage in the connector pins and soldered components. A scan tool should be used first to extract the current engine oil life percentage which needs to be recorded for future reference. The service technician must disconnect the negative Battery Cable and eliminate the covers from the ecm/tcm while removing electrical connector from the body harness and electrical connector from the engine harness. To free the ecm from its attachment to the underhood junction block bracket users should pull the retaining tab. Place and lock the ecm onto the underhood junction block bracket through the retaining tab while connecting the engine wiring harness electrical connector and body wiring harness electrical connector to the ecm then put back the ecm/tcm cover. The final procedure involves reconnecting the negative Battery Cable while performing an ecm program to ensure proper recording of engine oil life because failure to do so could default to 100 percent which would result in a required oil change after only 5000 km (3,000 mi) since the previous change.
