    A: The first step to replace an Engine Control Module (ECM) requires you to obtain engine oil life percentage data through a scan tool. Before you begin disconnect the Battery Cable to avoid damage then take off the ecm/tcm cover while also disconnecting the ecm electrical connectors. Reverse the position of the plastic retainer tabs before extracting the ecm from its installation in underhood junction block bracket. The installation process begins by inserting the new ecm in a downward direction until the tabs achieve secure locking then reconnecting the ecm electrical connectors and reinstalling the ecm/tcm cover. Connect the negative Battery Cable followed by the ecm programming process. A manual transaxle vehicle requires the clutch pedal position sensor learn procedure before the system can operate properly. When programming the new module users should input the recorded engine oil life data to prevent a default setting of 100 percent since this would require an oil change after traveling 5,000 km (3,000 mi) from the previous service.
