  • Q: How to replace the left exhaust manifold (RPO LS4) on 2006 Chevrolet Impala?
    A: You need to begin the left Exhaust Manifold replacement (RPO LS4) by first removing the engine sight shield and exhaust crossover pipe heat shield because they help access the crossover pipe nuts. The replacement process starts with removing exhaust crossover pipe nuts from the left Exhaust Manifold then continuing to take out left side spark plugs and the oil level indicator tube. Begin by removing heater hose retainer bolts before proceeding to take out Exhaust Manifold heat shield bolts and heat shield (603) and finally removing the left Exhaust Manifold. Travel to the Exhaust Manifold bolts to remove everything while disposing the old gasket. Thorough examination of the left Exhaust Manifold must occur first. Before installing the Exhaust Manifold bolts you should add a band of threadlock gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) measuring 5 mm wide (0.2 inch) to the bolt threads. Make sure the threads of the cylinder head bolt holes remain free of debris during this process. Place new gasket materials and exhaust components together, first set the center two bolts to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.) then move to alternating sides before sealing bolts with 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). A flat punch should be used to crease the gasket edge exposed from the left cylinder head back before installing Exhaust Manifold shield (603) with bolts (604) that require 9 nm (80 inch lbs.) tightening torque. Reconnect the oil level indicator tube beside installing the left spark plugs along with exhaust crossover pipe nuts requiring a torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). The last steps include installing the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield, and heater pipe retainer bolts that should be torqued to 16 nm (12 ft. Lbs.) while adding the engine sight shield.
