2006 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2006 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The first step in replacing a powertrain control module (PCM) requires a scan tool to get the engine oil life percentage data for programming the new module so it avoids an incorrect default to 100 percent inducing a 5,000 km (3,000 mi) oil change requirement from the last service. You must first note the preset radio stations before disconnecting the negative Battery Cable while turning off the ignition. To remove the pcm you must first disconnect its connectors then carefully drop the retaining tab in the lower battery box using a suitable tool before lifting the connector upward. To install the pcm users need to place it into the bracket located on the battery box front section before pushing until the retaining tab locks in position. Attach both pcm harness connectors together before applying the negative Battery Cable properly while tightening the battery terminal bolts to 17 n.m (13 lb ft). Run the Crankshaft relearn procedure after the pcm programming because the sensor requires learning about Crankshaft positional changes needed for misfire management. Finally, reset the clock and preset radio stations.
