2006 Chevrolet Malibu Rack and Pinion Boot Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rack and pinion boot and breather tube on 2006 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: In order to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot and breather tube off the vehicle, you will need to remove the outer tie rod followed by the Rack And Pinion gear. When replacing the inner tie rod, all of the boot parts should be replaced as well. Remove the small seal retaining clamp and the large seal retaining clamp from the Rack and Pinion Boot ; using side cutters, caution not to cut the end of the boot and caution not to put a screwdriver between the boot and tie rod in order to avoid damaging the gear assembly. Mark the position of breather tube from the gear assembly before pulling sack and pinion boot tightly with breather tube from the gear, throw the sack away. For installation, grease the inside of the Rack and Pinion Boot ribs and position the new large seal retaining clamp on the boot. Lining up the breather tube with the mark left on its removal and the molded nipple of the boot, plug it onto the inner Tie Rod End to ensure the arrows on the boot are lined up with the span on the gear casing. Insert the new small seal retaining clamp over the boot and work the boot towards the centre of the gear assembly, allowing boot to seat into inner tie rod retaining groove, ensuring boot is not twisted or puckered. Crimp the large seal retaining clamp , on boot and the small seal retaining clamp, to the inner tie rod assembly using the j 22610 service boot clamp installer (J 22610). Last, reinstall the Rack And Pinion gear and the outer tie rod.
