2006 Chevrolet Malibu Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2006 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Before handling any components of the Steering Column and intermediate shaft ensure the Steering Column lever is set to lock (FULL UP) position with the vehicle wheels pointing straight ahead so that rotating the Steering Column won't harm the sir coil assembly. The maintenance process starts with proper vehicle lift and tire removal beginning with the left front position. Start by removing the intermediate shaft to steering gear pinch bolt to discard alongside the removal of the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Lower the vehicle and remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt at the Steering Column shaft since you must discard this bolt too before sliding the intermediate shaft off the Steering Column shaft. Unseating the intermediate shaft seal from the dash requires gentle squeezing of the four tabs to pull the seal towards the interior of the vehicle followed by shaft/seal removal from the vehicle. Tilt the intermediate shaft/seal into position via the front dash opening while maintaining four tab placement without damaging the seal by twisting or squeezing during the installation process. Move the intermediate shaft seal forward from inside the drive compartment until all its four tabs fully engage. You should align the new intermediate shaft with the Steering Column shaft before adding the new Steering Column pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft. Torque the bolt to 49 nm (36 ft. Lbs.) for electronic power steering but only 62 nm (46 ft. Lbs.) for hydraulic power steering models. Fasten the intermediate shaft to the steering gear shaft by applying 49 nm (36 ft. Lbs.) of torque to the new steering gear pinch bolt and putting it on the intermediate shaft. The last step includes replacing the left front wheel.
