2007 Chevrolet Malibu Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2007 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: To replace the intermediate Steering Shaft, the Steering Column lever should be in the lock (FULL UP) position (the wheels of the vehicle should be straight ahead before it discharges the connection of Steering Column or intermediate shaft from steering gear) to prevent damages to the sir coil assembly. It starts by lifting up and supporting the vehicle and then remove the left from the tire. Then, remove the intermediate shaft to steering gear pinch bolt (discard the bolt) and disengage the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. You will find this larger head bolt near the inner case tip and it must be removed to complete the removal process allow the bolt to slides out and place it in a safe spot, as that's the only bolt you will be reusing. Remove the intermediate shaft from the Steering Column shaft, then unseat the intermediate shaft seal from the dash by squeezing the 4 tabs and pulling towards the inside of the vehicle, and remove the intermediate shaft/seal from the vehicle. For installation, put the intermediate shaft/seal through the front of the dash as long as the 4 tabs are engaged without twisting or squeezing the seal. Push in from within the vehicle until the seal is completely seated. Attach the new intermediate shaft to the Steering Column shaft, and install the new Steering Column pinch bolt with a torque of 49 n.m (36 lb ft) for the electronic power steering and 62 n.m (46 lb ft) for the hydraulic power steering. Mount the intermediate shaft on top of the steering gear shaft and insert the new steering gear pinch bolt and fasten it to 49 n.m (36 lb ft). Lastly, install the left front wheel.
