2008 Chevrolet Malibu Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2008 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The Steering Wheel requires straps for stability then locking the Steering Column to protect the sir system during intermediate Steering Shaft replacement. The Steering Column tilt lever needs to be set to lock (FULL UP) before beginning to disconnect the Steering Column and intermediate Steering Shaft. Support the wheel while turning it into a direct forward position. Detach the left front tire while also removing the wheel assembly. Separate the intermediate Steering Shaft from the steering gear by first discarding the intermediate Steering Shaft lower bolt at the steering gear location. Begin by removing the left side instrument panel insulator and continuing with the intermediate Steering Shaft bolt removal at the Steering Column which needs disposal. Using force to pull the intermediate Steering Shaft seal towards the interior of the automobile unseats it from the path through the instrument panel compartment. Transfer the intermediate Steering Shaft outside of the vehicle. To install the intermediate Steering Shaft feed it into the vehicle's interior while avoiding both seal squeezing and proper positioning. Check all 4 lock tabs to ensure they are intact. Replace the seal if any of its components show signs of damage. Position the intermediate Steering Shaft seal inside by pushing it to the front until all four lock tabs have completely engaged before installing the intermediate Steering Shaft to the Steering Column. Insert the new intermediate Steering Shaft bolt while applying a torque of 49 n.m (36 lb ft) with electronic power steering or 62 n.m (46 lb ft) torque with hydraulic power steering. Put back the left side instrument panel insulator after connecting the steering gear to the intermediate Steering Shaft and fastening the new intermediate Steering Shaft lower bolt to 49 n.m (36 lb ft). As the last step install the left front tire along with its wheel assembly.
