2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front harmonic balancer on 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: Before beginning crankshaft balancer replacement begin by adding the steering column anti-rotation pin (J42640) and take off accessory Drive Belt and air cleaner upper housing and engine mount strut and Starter motor and front Fender Splash Shield and transmission bellhousing bolt at 10 o'clock position on engine's rear side. To disassemble the shaft from the steering gear first disconnect transaxle cooler lines then unfasten the nuts of stabilizer shaft links followed by removing the pinch bolt from the intermediate steering shaft. You should disconnect the front lower air deflector braces alongside deflector with the additional step of removing radiator to frame braces. The work starts with setting up the engine support fixture (J41336-B) before raising the vehicle. Install the flywheel holding tool (EN 47699) after removing the frame to body bolts and tighten the bolt to 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs.). Lower the engine by 100 mm (4 inches) after tire and wheel removal and break the crankshaft balancer bolt (139) that returns for installation. The crankshaft balancer remover (J41816) with crankshaft end protector (J41816-2) needs to be used for removing the crankshaft balancer (138). The crankshaft balancer should receive its position on the crankshaft before using the crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J41665) for the installation process. Prevent any balancer misalignment before you secure the original crankshaft balancer bolt (139) with 330 nm (240 ft. Lbs. Torque. Check the crankshaft nose into the balancer bore using 2.4 - 4.48 mm (0.094 - 0.176 inch) measurement; the process requires repetition if necessary. Weld the new crankshaft balancer bolt (139) using first a torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) followed by an angle torque of 140 degrees through the torque angle meter (J45059). Reinstall the transmission bellhousing bolt after removing the flywheel holding tool (EN 47699) together with its bolt. Tighten the bolt to 75 nm (55 ft. Lbs.). Position the frame after raising it and install frame to body bolts then reassemble all components including the front lower air deflector, intermediate steering shaft, stabilizer shaft link lower nuts and transaxle cooler lines. The last procedure involves removing the engine support fixture (J41336-B) before reinstalling components in their original sequence including front Fender Splash Shield and starting motor engine mount strut and right front tire and wheel assembly. A crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn step should be completed after assembly.
